This is a male European garden spider, Araneus diadematus, also variously known as the cross orbweaver, diadem spider, orangie, cross spider and crowned orb weaver.

It is an orb-weaver and is native to Europe, although it was introduced into North America. Colourings can vary from extremely light yellow to very dark grey, but they all have mottled white markings across the dorsal abdomen forming a cross, as you can see above.
It is not unknown for the female to eat the male directly after mating.
