Nerja History Museum

The Nerja Museum – Museo de Nerja – is an initiative developed and managed by the Nerja Caves Foundation – Fundación Cueva de Nerja –  which finally opened to the public in December 2011.

The Museum is located in the top left corner of Plaza de España in Nerja, above the municipal underground car park and just a short stroll from the Balcón de Europa, the focal point of Nerja.

The museum traces the history of the town of Nerja from the cave dwellers of Paleolitic times to the tourist boom years of the 1960’s.

The exhibits are a mix of information panels and screens and actual objects, including some items from the Nerja Caves.

The museum is divided into four distinct thematic areas and ten sections, beginning with a broad introduction to Nerja, both historically and geographically, and finishing with Nerja as it is today.

In between you discover the history of the town, including the characters who shaped its development, life during the Moorish occupation, agriculture and more.

The museum is open every day and there is a special discount price for those visiting both the Museum and the Nerja Caves.
